Brewery Du Bocq was founded in 1858, but at the start production only took place in winter, as in the summertime everybody was busy working on the fields. Distribution was also limited to the surroundings of the brewery, until Gauloise Brown was brewed for the first time in the beginning of the twentieth century. This beer proved very popular in a much wider radius and allowed for the brewery to brew full time. Gauloise Brown has been continually produced from its first brew until this day and is the oldest beer in Brewery Du Bocq’s portfolio. The dark color, high alcohol percentage and spicy flavor reveal that Gauloise Brown started out as a winter beer. The roasted malt brings forth aromatic notes of caramel and dark chocolate, while in the taste spices such as liquorice and coriander can be enjoyed. While the beer is rather full bodied, it also has some fresh and fruity notes making it easy to drink. In the aftertaste, the original coffee and caramel-like flavors are accompanied by a slightly bitter sensation. A perfectly balanced beer that has stood the test of time.
