Brewery Rodenbach is famous for its mixed fermentation beers in the Flemish Red-Brown Ale category. Mixed fermentation means the marriage of top-fermented beer with various bacteria and wild yeast to produce the complex flavor that sour beer fans are so addicted to. Hops are used but serve mainly for a stable head and as preservative. The main asset of these beers is their vinous character. Rodenbach Grand Cru is an exceptional Flemish red-brown ale that owes its fresh and sour taste and complex fruitiness to its lengthy partial maturation in wooden oak casks. While brewing methods have evolved over the years, the way of maturing the red beers is still the way it used to be done. Rodenbach Grand Cru consists of 1/3 young beer and 2/3 beer matured two years in oak barrels, also called “foeder”. This means that it has on average been left for much longer in the oak casks of the brewery which results in a more pronounced version of most beers in the same Flemish red-Brown Beers. The aroma contains earthy touches of oak and fruity hints of cherries, dark grapes and green apples. The same characteristics can be found in the taste which is sour with a little bit of sweetness. Eventually we get a complex beer with a great deal of wood and esters, vinous and with a very long aftertaste, just like a Grand Cru wine. According to the late beer specialist Michael Jackson, Rodenbach Grand Cru is a “World Classic” and “the Burgundy of Belgium”.
