Putting the word “classic” in your brand name is risky as it raises the expectations. Rodenbach Classic however is widely considered as the classic example of a Flemish red-brown ale, also referred to as red ale or Belgian sour ale. This type of beer is based on mixed fermentation and blend of 1/4 of beer that has matured for 2 years in oak casks and 3/4 of much younger beer that has only aged for about half a year. Rodenbach has a dark red color and looks pretty sturdy, but one sip shows the beer its true character. Traditionally brewed but with an untraditional taste, Rodenbach Classic is refreshingly light and mildly acidic, a veritable thirst-quencher. The sourness combined with a bouquet of fruity flavors can be compared to a light red wine. The late beer specialist Michael Jackson proclaimed Rodenbach Classic as “the most refreshing beer in the world”. According to the late beer specialist Michael Jackson, Rodenbach Grand Cru is a “World Classic” and “the Burgundy of Belgium”.
