Brewed on the occasion of its 150th anniversary, the name of the beer refers to the year when Brewery Du Bocq was founded. An old picture of the brewery of when it was still a farmhouse decorates the front label to mark the authenticity. Saison 1858 does not want to be more than it is. Brewed in the old fashion and based on an old recipe of Brewery Du Bocq, Saison 1858 focusses on the refreshing part of how Saison beers really used to be. Nevertheless the beer has more than enough punch and complexity to convince even the most cynical criticasters. Saison 1858 is an unfiltered blonde beer with a touch of wheat and a strong bitterness. The head of the beer is delicate and fine, the aroma rather spicy. The real party begins with the first sip though. Initially floral and fruity aspects of coriander, orange, licorice and lime come forth making the beer quite similar to a spicy white beer. The taste then shifts to a stronger, punchier beer with a lasting dry and bitter aftertaste. In other words, Saison 1858 combines perfectly the best aspects of a thirst-quenching white beer and a strong bitter-blonde ale. In 2013 Saison 1858 was awarded the title of the World’s Best Saison Beer. With descriptions such as “great complexity, robust, balanced, fruity, yeasty, spicy, very smooth, crisp, refreshing and highly drinkable”, Saison 1858 clearly ticks all the boxes.
