The name “Echt Kriekenbier” literally means “Real Cherry Beer” in the Dutch language, and it pretty much sums up what it’s all about. Only real cherries are used from the east of Belgium are used to blend with a red brown base beer. Most of the existing cherry beers are based on either sour lambic beers or sweetish white beers, however using a well-balanced sweet-sour red-brown as a starting point, Echt Kriekenbier falls into quite a different category. Each year around July, the freshly harvested cherries are added to the red-brown ale. This ale has already aged in oaken casks for a while, but after adding the cherries it is left there for another 4 months. Because the taste of the cherries varies from year to year due to weather conditions, the beer is always blended with cherry beer from the 2 previous years. That way the brewery can guarantee a consistent taste. With 6.8%, the alcohol percentage of Echt Kriekenbier is decidedly higher than the average fruit beer. However, when drinking from this dark-red cherry ale, the beer never feels heavy or over the top. The perfectly balanced sweet-sour taste makes for a very refreshing experience.
