Brewery Het Anker is located in Mechelen, and they decided to make an easy to drink brew for all its citizens. Easy to drink, but still with enough character. And with a peculiar name. The inspiration for this brew originates in the night of January 27th in the year 1687. The moon projected its reddish glow on the city’s Saint Rumbold’s tower, which was wrapped in a dense fog. For anyone it was a beautiful sight, but one drunken man shouted “Fire, fire, the tower is on fire!” The alarm was sounded and people were making haste to help extinguish the so-called fire. Before the tower was reached however, the moon had moved through the fog, showing an undamaged tower. From that moment on, the people of Mechelen are called the Maneblussers, meaning “Moonextinguishers” in Dutch. After several years of finding the right balance and alcohol volume, Maneblusser eventually became a blond beer with an alcohol percentage of 5.8%. It has a subtle citrus aroma which makes for a very refreshing character and an aftertaste with punch. While easy to drink and rather low in alcohol it is a top-fermented beer with enough character to stand out in the crowd.
