Gaul was an ancient region of Western Europe, corresponding roughly to modern-day France and Belgium. The people living in this area were called the “Gaulois”. The Brewery’s founder, Martin Belot, drew his inspiration from the many Gallo-Roman sites in the region to create an authentic beer honoring his early ancestors: “Gauloise”. Like the name of the beer already reveals, Gauloise Amber is a beautifully amber colored, refreshing beer combining the best of English pale ales and the Belgian traditional use of spices. The aroma of the beer doesn’t really stand out although it reveals hoppy accents and a whiff of caramel. While the aroma might lack a bit in punch, the taste makes up for that. Hazelnut, orange, banana, liquorice, clove, coriander, … those are just a few of the sensations you’re in for. All this with the clear caramel taste of the slightly roasted malts. Although all these different accents might seem too much, Gauloise Amber remains remarkably uncomplicated and refreshing, just like the better English bitter ale. Dry and inspired, Gauloise Amber is a superbly balanced beer that was awarded in 2009 with gold at the European Beer Star and in 2012 with silver at the World Beer Cup.
