Duchesse de Bourgogne was named after Mary of Burgundy who ruled parts of France and Belgium in the 15th century. Despite a fairly short reign of merely 5 years, she was supportive of many commercial activities including the brewing of beer. The beer Duchesse de Bourgogne was named so to honor her benignity. Duchesse de Bourgogne is a traditional Flemish red-brown beer of mixed fermentation. It is refreshingly sour with a many tones of fruit like passion fruit and cherry. The roasted malt brings along a sweetness that ensures a perfectly balanced beer. After the main fermentation Duchesse de Bourgogne matures for 18 months in oak casks of which the tannins are the source of the fruitiness of the beer. The final product is a result of 18 months old beer that is blended with young beer of 8 months. Verhaeghe Brewery started brewing Duchesse de Bourgogne as the grand cru version of their Vichtenaar. It is a little higher in alcohol (6.2% compared to 5.1%) which gives a little more depth to the beer, making it more refined and better balanced. Duchesse de Bourgogne is a superb example of a Flemish red-brown beer, refreshingly sour with a sweet touch that doesn't linger too long.
