The Westmalle Abbey is world renowned for its Tripel, but even before its conception the monks already brewed an atypical brown beer. This brown beer has been available since 1865, but it is only from 1926 that they perfected the recipe that is still in use today. To brew Westmalle Dubbel, the monks decided to double the amounts of raw ingredients to make a stronger beer. As such, the name for this new beer was quickly chosen (dubbel = double in Dutch). Westmalle Dubbel has a rather neutral aroma, but the complexity of the beer is revealed in the taste. Most dark brown Belgian beers are sweetish, but Westmalle Dubbel is more earthy with roasted malt sensations and coffee-like bitterness. Caramel and fruity touches of banana and raisin linger in the taste, constantly creating a perfect balance with the fresh-bitter overtone. The soft mouth-feel and the long-lasting dry aftertaste guarantee a superb taste experience.
