Westmalle Tripel is often referred to as the "Mother of all Tripels". This type of beer was first brewed in Westmalle Abbey in 1934 and still serves as the norm to brew a good tripel-style beer. For this sort of beer, the ingredients are used in a quantity up to 3 times more than usual; hence the name “tripel”. The abundant use of the ingredients leads to a higher alcohol percentage. That is why today the style is also referred to as “strong golden ale” or “strong pale ale”. Westmalle Tripel is a complex beer that starts out with a sweet banana aroma, but also immediately kicks in a with subtle hoppy bitterness. The banana aroma doesn’t result in a sweet beer. Instead, the taste is predominantly earthy and malty with the floral and bitterness of the hops lingering around until long in the aftertaste. Soft and creamy in the mouth, with a bitter and dry feel, Westmalle Tripel begs for another sip despite the high alcohol content. The high carbonation gives the beer an extra spunky character, resulting in a truly deserved name “Mother of All Tripels”.
