Het Anker Brewery is located in Mechelen, the capital of the Lowlands (Belgium & the Netherlands) in the 16th century. According to the earliest records available, the people from Mechelen were proud to make a beer dedicated to their emperor Keizer Karel (also known as Charles V or Charles Quint). This Emperor’s Beer was called Gouden Carolus (Golden Charles) after the golden coins with the emperor’s image that were used in those days. It seemed the beer was especially popular during fox hunts as it lifted the spirit of both horses and riders. Het Anker Brewery still makes this Emperor’s Beer which is now called Gouden Carolus Classic to differentiate it from the other Gouden Carolus beers in the line-up. The use of dark and well-balanced caramel malts and the high alcohol percentage make for a very warm mouthfeel reminiscent of a good wine, while still retaining the freshness of beer. Gouden Carolus Classic is a full bodied, sweet and warm Belgian dark ale that yearly receives many recognitions, including in 2010 the election as World’s Best Dark Ale in 2010’s World Beer Awards competition.
